Welcome to the website of the Department of Road Construction and Road Maintenance (SB-SE) of the University of Wuppertal and the road construction lab BESTLAB.

The teaching and research field Road Construction and Road Maintenance is a part of the Center of Transport Expertise of the University of Wuppertal and is represented by Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. Pahirangan Sivapatham as successor of Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. Hartmut Johannes Beckedahl since October 2019.

In addition to the scientific education of young academics and the pursuing of research projects, the SB-SE presents itself as a partner for the practice in the field of building material producers, construction companies, engineering offices as well as in the field of dimensioning, construction and maintenance of roads, bus traffic pavements and airfield pavements.

With the road construction lab BESTLAB, the SB-SE has a testing laboratory with state-of-the-art equipment that is used for control, suitability and extended suitability tests as well as for the development of new products, including proof of adequate performance properties.

In addition to laboratory tests, field tests are also carried out to determine the bearing capacity, degree of compaction and evenness of various layers of the pavements as well as the skid resistance of the road surface in wet conditions.

The SB-SE offers consulting services for the construction, maintenance, repair and renewal of pavements. The SB-SE's range of services also includes the solution of special tasks, for example the individual dimensioning of the superstructure of traffic surfaces, taking into account the properties of innovative construction materials and construction material mixtures.
