Traffic Speed Deflectometer (TSD)
The core of the Pavement-Scanner is the Traffic-Speed-Deflectometer (TSD) measuring system. The semi-trailer loads the road structure with a static axle load of 10 t in standard measurement mode. For special measurements, axle loads of 11.5 t and 13 t are also possible.
During the journey, the dynamic axle loads are recorded continuously. The load is applied to the road surface via the twin tires. The reaction of the road to this is a brief and almost completely elastic deformation of the road surface. In the right-hand rolling lane, this reaction is recorded before and after the load axis in the loading and unloading load, with a total of 11 Doppler laser sensors, by measuring the deformation velocities of the road surface at the distance between the Doppler laser sensors. The deformation trough is determined by solving physical-mathematical relationships.
The data obtained at very short intervals between measurement points are processed as 10-m mean values. Of particular importance is that the recording of the loading and unloading load makes it possible to also record the phase shift between the occurrence of the maximum axle load and maximum deformation and to take this into account in the bearing capacity analysis. So far, bearing capacity measurements using the TSD principle have only been used on asphalt roads. Application to concrete roads is the subject of future research.
In order to be able to evaluate and assess the data acquired with the Pavement Scanner at network level, software products specially tailored to the Pavement Scanner are used for acquisition, management, evaluation, quality assurance and virtual driving of the measurement sections.
